POTS Management Through Sodium

POTS, or Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, is marked by a noticeable rise in heart rate when moving from a seated or reclined position to standing. Often linked to reduced blood volume (hypovolemia), this disorder impacts the autonomic nervous system, leading to symptoms such as dizziness, rapid heartbeats, fainting, and chest discomfort. The exact cause of POTS remains debated, but there are effective strategies for symptom management.

Engaging in consistent exercise and physical routines, as well as boosting salt and fluid consumption, can help increase blood volume and subsequently reduce POTS symptoms. Instead of jumping to medication or costly treatments, staying hydrated could be a simple remedy. As per a study by the Cleveland Clinic, an intake of up to 10,000mg of sodium is suggested. To clarify, this is equivalent to 25,000mg or roughly 4 teaspoons of salt. Hence, those with POTS should consider increasing their daily salt consumption.

For a healthful method to up your salt and hydration levels, try electrolyte-rich water. Simply add a dash of sea salt and a splash of lemon to your water for a homemade electrolyte drink.

Prefabricated electrolyte beverages can also offer a convenient means to augment salt and fluid without drastically changing one's diet. With a vast array of electrolyte products on platforms like Amazon, choosing becomes tricky. However, key label aspects can guide your choice.

Primarily, check the sodium content per serving. Ideally, it should be well above 500mg. To put it in context, a 20oz Gatorade bottle contains only 270mg of sodium. Crafting a tasty electrolyte drink isn't simple. Opt for naturally flavored options and steer clear of unnecessary additives like artificial sweeteners, food dyes, sugars, high fructose corn syrup, and stevia.

High-grade electrolyte supplements, like those from Insaltd, might be suitable. Insaltd offers 900mg of sodium per serving, along with 300mg of potassium and 100mg of magnesium. It's naturally flavored and uses Glyvia, a natural, zero-calorie sweetener.

Insaltd products can be instrumental for POTS patients in raising their salt intake, which in turn helps in symptom management.
